I absolutely love reading end-of-days/ post-apocalyptic kinds of books and this is a really great post-apocalyptic books for middle schoolers. The book begins on Day 56 following a plague that has wiped out much of humanity. 16-year-old Nadia must now leave home and make a trek across country with her younger brother, Rabbit, to her grandfather's compound in West Virginia. Along the way she encounters many people and must decide who she can trust or not. Nadia and Rabbit must use the survival skills they learned from their military father to survive. And when she finally makes it to West Virginia will her grandpa even be there?
If you like post-apocalyptic books then you should read A Matter of Days. I enjoyed that even though it was a grim topic, Nadia and Rabbit were able to meet animals and people along the way who could help them and could lighten the tone a little bit. Also, Nadia and Rabbit's relationship, which grew stronger throughout the book, was a positive focus in the book. If you like books with adventure, you should read A Matter of Days.
