Kyra, who believes that the princess will ruin the kingdom if she isn’t taken out, knows she cannot stop until she has killed the princess. With the help of a person-tracking pig and a strange (and cute) man, Fred, Kyra seeks to finish what she started. As Kyra and Fred’s relationship begins to develop, she makes a discovery that will change their relationship forever. Will Kyra stop the princess before she is captured herself? If you like your books with adventure, mystery, romance, and a little magic, you will love Poison!
Izzy comes from a long line of monster hunters. From a young child, Izzy has been trained to hunt monsters, but her mom has never trusted her to go on a mission by herself, until now. Izzy and her mom move to a small town and Izzy's first solo mission is to investigate and get rid of the ghost that is plaguing Mary Evans High School. Luckily, when Izzy arrives at school, she finds a group of friends who will help her. Her friends have created a ghost hunting society called PMS (Paranormal Management Society) and they will work together to stop the ghost, before it's too late. School Spirits is a fun read with a strong, female role in Izzy. For being a ghost story, it isn't especially scary, and focuses more on Izzy trying to figure out what high school, dating, and having friends is all about. There is some mystery and adventure. The ending also leads me to believe that this story will have a sequel, which I would enjoy reading. After all, who doesn't love a girl who can break someone's collar bone with a dodge ball. Want to know more? Read School Spirits! I absolutely love reading end-of-days/ post-apocalyptic kinds of books and this is a really great post-apocalyptic books for middle schoolers. The book begins on Day 56 following a plague that has wiped out much of humanity. 16-year-old Nadia must now leave home and make a trek across country with her younger brother, Rabbit, to her grandfather's compound in West Virginia. Along the way she encounters many people and must decide who she can trust or not. Nadia and Rabbit must use the survival skills they learned from their military father to survive. And when she finally makes it to West Virginia will her grandpa even be there? If you like post-apocalyptic books then you should read A Matter of Days. I enjoyed that even though it was a grim topic, Nadia and Rabbit were able to meet animals and people along the way who could help them and could lighten the tone a little bit. Also, Nadia and Rabbit's relationship, which grew stronger throughout the book, was a positive focus in the book. If you like books with adventure, you should read A Matter of Days. Joel has spent his entire life studying Rithmatists. He eavesdrops on lectures in Rithmatist classrooms, practices drawing Rithmatist defenses, and even tries to sneak it to the Rithmatist section of the library. The only problem is that Joel can never be a Rithmatist, the individuals who are responsible for defending civilization from the Wild Chalklings that threaten to destroy them. During the summer break, Joel is chosen as to work as an assistant to the Rithmatist, Professor Fitch, who is striving to uncover the reasons why Rithmatists have been disappearing all over the country. Will Joel and Fitch be able to solve the mystery before Joel becomes one of the victims? The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson is a fantasy novel that has action, mystery, and adventure. It is listed as one of the Notable Children's Books of 2013 by the New York Times and is one of our Lone Star Books for 2014-2015. |
